An outstanding feature of our School of Theater is the excellence of our facilities. The school has three mainstage theaters solely for its use: the Elizabeth Evans Baker Theater in Kantner Hall, the Virginia Hahne Theater also in Kantner Hall, and the Forum Theater in the Radio-Television Building , next door to Kantner Hall. The Baker Theater is a fully equipped, standard proscenium theater, seating 265. It has a newly-rigged stage house with 33 linesets, a dimmer-per-circuit lighting system, with a state-of-the-art sound and communications system. |

The Forum Theater has seating for 275. While its primary use is as a 3/4 thrust stage, it is also capable of conversion to an arena stage. Its lighting and sound systems are comparable to those in the Baker Theater.
Our other mainstage theater, The Hahne, seats approximately 75. It is a flexible "black-box" theater with its own lighting and sound system, and equipment inventory. It is used for both mainstage production as well as for laboratory shows and classwork.
In addition to our "mainstage" theaters, the School of Theater has three main studio spaces in Kantner Hall, which we use for both classes and lab/workshop performances. All these spaces feature fully sprungfloors and complete lighting and sound facilities. These studios are in constant use for laboratory productions, usually directed and designed by students.
All of the technical facilities in Kantner Hall and the Forum Theater have been renovated, include ample space and up-to-date technology, and are supervised by full-time faculty and staff. The equipment and procedures are comparable to those of a major regional theater.
The scene shop is fully-equipped for contemporary construction and finish techniques, including a wide variety of welding and metal-working equipment, foam and plastics. Scenic artists will also find almost everything they need for painting and texturing in our paint shop.
We have just completed a high-end AUTOCAD LAB which includes 12 workstations, compatible scanners, a top of the line color laser printer, and HP plotter that allows full and half-scale rendering with exquisite portfolio quality finish. Projection equipment and full networking make this an excellent classroom to teach the latest in computer-aided design for scene, lighting, and costume designers.
The costume shop has top-of-the-line industrial sewing machines and sergers, a dye vat and OSHA approved safety equipment for working with a variety of craft techniques, in foam, plastics, leather, jewelry, wig construction, etc.
The sound studio has a fully equipped digital recording studio handling over 16 virtual tracks, using ProTools with Digital Performer. The studio also houses a large library of sound effects CDs and an increasing library of samples and music CDs.
Our properties shop, located in its own facility, is equipped for a wide variety of construction techniques, including furniture construction and upholstery, and a large vented hood for working with more hazardous techniques.
Classrooms include a model-making room for the Production Design and Technology Program, multiple performance classrooms and an intimate seminar room with a variety of multimedia presentation capabilities. All theater faculty and administration have their offices in Kantner Hall. The School also uses spaces in other university buildings, including studios in Putnam Hall, which houses the School of Dance , and the historic Ridges Auditorium.
The university's Alden Library contains more than 1.7 million titles, including more than 20,000 scripts. It also houses the Fine Arts Library, with its own full-time reference librarian, long time theater supporter, Anne Braxton. The Fine Arts Library is a unique collection of 40,000 titles that provides students in the College of Fine Arts with ready access to scholarly and visual materials including the history of furniture, costume, architecture, and interior design. This material is especially useful for designers, directors, actors, and dramaturgs. The extensive periodicals collection ranges from design to scholarship, with more than 250 periodicals in the arts. Students also have access to a large collection of videotapes. Finally, the Music Library, housed in the School of Music , has an extensive collection of recordings and literature, essential to research and production efforts.
