Sylvester Young received the Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Missouri at Columbia, Missouri and a Master of Music degree from Bowling Green State University where he studied trombone with David Glasmire and conducting with both Mark Kelly and Ivan Trussler. Dr. Young, a native of Florida, completed the Bachelor of Music Education degree at Florida A. and M. University and has been recognized as one of its "100 Most Outstanding Graduates." Prior to coming to Ohio University, Young was Director of Bands at Lincoln University of Jefferson City, Missouri and Hampton University of Hampton, Virginia. At Hampton University, he established the "Marching Force",  a 220-piece band known for its precision in marching and excellence in musicianship. Young is an Associate Professor of Music Education, teaching Jazz Ensemble Methods, Organization and Administration of School Music, Computer Skills for Music Educators, Music in Multicultural United States, and supervising student teachers. In addition, Young serves as the Associate Director of the School of Music. He is active as an adjudicator, midi clinician, and drill writer for both high schools and colleges.

His research interests include service learning, distance learning and technology in music education, and the effectiveness of method courses in the music education curriculum.  He presents workshops and poster board sessions throughout the country.
