Kamile Geist holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Baylor University and a Master of Arts degree in Music Therapy from Texas Woman’s University. She is a board-certified music therapist and holds an all-level music education certification. She was hired as Assistant Professor of Music Therapy at Ohio University in 2003.
Before moving to Athens, she worked as a middle school band director for 3 years in Plano, Texas. After receiving her Master's degree, Professor Geist joined the music therapy team in Plano Independent School District where she treated children with a variety of disabilities and consulted with special educators and music educators on how to teach children with disabilities in the music classroom. In 2001, she founded North Dallas Music Therapy Services, based in Plano, Texas where she maintained a private practice, contracted with Highland Park and Frisco school districts in the Dallas area, presented on the topic of including students with special needs in the music classroom, and taught music therapy courses as Adjunct Professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
Currently Professor Geist teaches music therapy curriculum, serves on various national, community, and university committees, and conducts research, collaborating with the various departments at Ohio University and facilities in the Southeast Ohio region, such as Head Start. Professor Geist currently serves on the American Music Therapy Association’s Academic Program Approval Committee, the Ohio University Graduate Council, the School of Music Enrollment Management Committee, and the School of Music International Studies Committee. She was a founding member of the Southeast Ohio Autism society and will serve as the Vice President for the 08/09 year.
Her research endeavors include music therapy treatment for children with autism, music therapy and speech therapy co-treatment strategies, and implications of music assisting children with logical thinking skills related to learning math. She has been featured in Ohio University's online research publication Outlook and research journal Perspectives. She is published in the Journal of Instructional Psychology, the Journal of Music Therapy, the Early Childhood Newsletter, and Young Children. She and her husband, Dr. Eugene Geist, Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education at Ohio University, recently co-directed the first annual “Working With Children In Spain”, education abroad program, based in Valladolid, Spain |
