Jazz Ensembles, Jazz Combos, and Jazz Percussion Ensemble form the jazz performance experience at Ohio University. These ensembles are open to all qualified students by audition, regardless of major. Concerts on and off campus, runouts, tours and the annual Spring Jazz Festival with renowned guest artists provide students with a variety of performance opportunities. Students also benefit from a broad range of jazz studies courses, including jazz improvisation, jazz history, jazz theory, jazz arranging, and jazz ensemble conducting.
Three Canadian tours, culminating with a performance with Buddy DeFranco, Matrix, and Maynard Ferguson and his Band, as well as Jazz Festival performances with Bill Watrous, Jane Monheit, Jim McNeely, Ashley Alexander, Jerry Niewood, Urbie Green, Gary Carney, Dave Samuels, Howie Smith, Jeff Halsey, Bob Thompson, Dwayne Dolphin, Jeff Tyzik and Steve Houghton have established a rich tradition of jazz performance at Ohio University.
