Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy

Music Therapy is the systematic application of music and other treatment methodologies by a trained music therapist to restore, maintain, or enhance the cognitive, socio-emotional, and/or physical functioning of disabled persons of all ages. The Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) is a skilled musician and therapist who generally serves as a member of a team of trained medical or educational professionals, participating in the assessment, treatment, and progress evaluation of the clients served.
The curriculum consists of studies in music therapy, psychology, sociology, and anthropology (20- 30% of coursework); studies in music (45-50%); general studies (20-25%); and electives (5%). A six-month internship at a facility approved by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), or a university-approved affiliation, is required prior to graduation.
OU Internship Affiliations
Following successful completion of the internship and graduation, the student is eligible to sit for the national Board Certification Examination. The entry-level professional credentials earned upon successful completion of the program are the Bachelor of Music degree with a major in music therapy (BM) and the designation of Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC). Students should contact the Head of Music Therapy or the School of Music Office for a personal interview and audition dates required for acceptance into the School of Music.

Undergraduate Equivalency in Music Therapy
Qualified students holding an undergraduate degree in music may earn an equivalency in music therapy at the undergraduate level. The student does not earn a degree; however, successful completion of the music therapy curriculum and six-month internship at a facility approved by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), or a university-approved affiliation, allows the student to take the Board Certification Examination. The entry-level credential earned is Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC).

Opportunities For Research, Creative Activity, and Training
The 20 community sites affiliated with the Music Therapy Department to provide practica placements and the Athens Community Music School compose a rich field for study and creative activity. OU Music Therapy Current Practicum Sites These and other unique opportunities are available to students under the direction and guidance of the music therapy faculty. Students may also participate in research conducted by faculty members.
The Music Therapy Division participates in the research-based Appalachian Health Care initiative of the university. Special projects including studies conducted with the summer Kids on Campus reading camp look at the use of music to influence literacy
