Honors Orchestra Festival 2008

The School of Music announces the fifth annual Honors Orchestra Festival to be held on the Athens campus November14-16, 2008. (Click here for a brochure.) This event honors the top high school string players in Ohio and the surrounding regions. This select ensemble will join with our college musicians to perform challenging orchestral repertoire. Members will have the opportunity to work with faculty in sectionals and master classes throughout the weekend, learn about Ohio University and its prestigious School of Music, and receive advising about their future goals in music.This year's special guest artist will be Mr. Janos Starker, cellist, who will be leading a master class during the festival.

The orchestra is open to string students currently in grades 9-12 and selection is by audition. School of Music faculty will hold auditions throughout the state, or applicants may submit a recorded audition. To reserve an audition time, students should apply by mail or via FAX; applications must be received by October 1, 2008 for live auditions, or October 10 for recorded audition submissions.

Registration and Audition Information:
LIVE AUDITIONS: Mail or fax the registration form to the address on the form by deadline of October 1.
RECORDED AUDITIONS: Send in the registration form and audition fee ($5) with your recording. Deadline for receipt of recordings is October 10.

Auditions:
Live auditions will be held the weeks of September 29-October 10. Circle your preferred location on the registration form. Auditionees should be prepared to perform approximately three minutes from any solo or ensemble piece that demonstrates technical and musical abilities. These selections may be from two different works. Sight reading may be asked.

If you are unable to make a live audition date, send a recording (cassette tape, CD, VHS video, or DVD) of five minutes from any solo or ensemble piece that demonstrates technical and musical abiliites. Auditionees may prepare selections from two different works. TOP

Audition and Participation Fees:

An audition fee of $5 is required of all applicants and is due at the time of audition or must be sent with the audition recording.

Participant fee for the entire weekend is only $99. This includes the educational tuition, lodging, meals described under lodging/meals, social events, transportation to and from the hotel beginning on Friday evening, and a custom Honors Orchestra T-Shirt. Participants must confirm participation with payment in full by Friday, November 7.

Lodging and Meals:
Participants stay at chaperoned accomodations at the Hampton Inn in Athens, Ohio. Graduate teaching associates from the School of Music serve as chaperones during the entire festival. Saturday and Sunday continental breakfasts are provided, along with the Saturday evening meal. Students are responsible for meals on Friday evening, Saturday noon, and Sunday noon. TOP
