Composition
Submit a portfolio containing the following:
1) Scores of original compositions — may be submitted on paper or as computer files on a data CD or DVD. (Acceptable formats include files made with Sibelius or any of the Finale family of software. Files from other notation programs that have been converted to Acrobat Reader-compatible PDF format are also acceptable.)
2) Recordings of the scores you submit, if available. (Acceptable formats include audio CD, DVD, mp3 format on data CD, or audio cassette.)
3) Applicant's Narrative Statement: — artist's statement, education and career goals, plus optional program notes for compositions being submitted.
When mailing your portfolio, please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope if you wish to have materials returned after the review process. (Please do not send scores and recordings as email attachments.)
An interview/portfolio review session is also recommended, especially for students seeking graduate assistantships or other financial aid. Please contact the School of Music for scheduling.
Conducting
Submit a videotape (approximately 10-20 minutes) demonstrating current conducting skills. A personal interview in which acceptable keyboard facility, performance on the candidate’s major instrument, sight-singing, and aural skills, are demonstrated is also required.
Music Education
Auditions demonstrating graduate-level proficiency are required for diagnostic purposes only. A recorded audition is accepted provisionally, and only when a personal audition is difficult or impossible to arrange. A writing sample on a topic assigned by the Music Education Division and a video tape of a rehearsal or teaching episode, or demonstration of a teaching episode are also required.

Music Therapy
Applicants must submit a writing sample and evidence of prior experience in working with persons with disabilities. A Bachelor of Music Therapy degree, or its equivalent, is required. Music Theory
Contact the chair of the theory division for specific information.
Performance & Performance Pedagogy
Auditions demonstrating graduate-level performance proficiency are required. Recorded auditions are accepted provisionally, and only when a personal audition is difficult or impossible to arrange. Candidates in voice and piano not auditioning in person must submit video recordings. Please refer to the specific division for additional information.
Graduate Performance Certificate Program
Auditions demonstrating graduate-level performance proficiency are required. The 30 credit hour program is designed to be completed in three to six quarters of full time enrollment. Applicants must have an earned baccalaureate degree although exceptions may be considered in cases where applicants can document that they have the equivalent in professional performing experience and meet the School of Music academic standards. Students pursue the performance certificate in a nondegree status and may not simultaneously work toward a Master of Music degree.
