General Information:
The School of Music awards the Master of Music (M.M.) degree in performance, conducting, music education, music therapy, composition, theory, and music history and literature.  A non-degree graduate level Performance Certificate is also available.

A minimum of 45-48 quarter hours of graduate credit is required to complete MM programs. In addition to meeting the basic requirements of each curriculum, students have the opportunity through electives to design a degree program to fit their own personal needs and goals.  Although most of the courses will be in the field of music, non-music courses may be elected with the approval of the advisor.

During registration week, all graduate students are required to take entrance examinations in music theory and music history and literature.   The results of these examinations are used in planning the student's course of study.  Deficiencies in undergraduate preparation should be removed during the first year of study.

A culminating thesis is required for the Master of Music degrees in music therapy and music history and literature.  A recital is required for the M.M degree in the area of performance and a major composition is required for the Master's degree in composition.  A thesis, non-thesis, or recital option is available in music education. An oral examination which covers the degree discipline, music history, and music theory is required.

GRE:
The Graduate Record examination is not required for admittance to the School of Music. However, any student who anticipates applying for university fellowships should take the GRE prior to entering a graduate program in music.

To begin a graduate program in music, a student is required to have completed an undergraduate degree in music, with at least a 2.5 accumulative average.  The degree must be from an accredited institution offering an undergraduate degree equivalent to those meeting the requirements of the National Association of Schools of Music.
