Private Lessons :

piano girlPrivate lesson instruction is available to students of all ages and ability levels on flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, tuba, percussion, violin, viola, cello, bass, piano, voice, and guitar. All students are expected to provide their own instrument.  Lessons are offered on a weekly basis during each of our three 10-week quarters and 5 weeks in the summer. Lesson durations are 30, 45, or 60 minutes and fees vary based on length of lesson and experience of instructor.  ACMS employs OU music students, Affiliate Faculty (master’s degrees and significant teaching experience), and OU school of music faculty as instructors. Private lesson tuition includes weekly private lessons, opportunities to perform on ACMS recitals, and student progress reports.

A note about lessons with Affiliate Faculty:  Students who take private lessons in with an ACMS Affiliate Faculty member will have their tuition based on 33 lessons per year (excluding summer). Tuition includes weekly private lessons, group lessons, opportunities to perform on ACMS recitals, and written progress reports (2-3 annually).

Classes for Children:
Jump Start with Music – AVAILABLE IN WINTER –
Kamile Geist, instructor; $88 for 8 classes; Thursdays from 5:15-6pm; Room 690D ; Open to 3 & 4 year olds only; enrollment limited to 5.
Children will enjoy playing instruments, singing, and moving while being introduced to pre-school math and reading skills.

KidSing! – AVAILABLE IN FALL, WINTER, & SPRING Melanie Horne, instructor; $88 for 8 classes; Saturdays from 9:30-10:15am; Room 494. Open to 1st  & 2nd graders only.
Students will learn the FUNdamentals of music through games and play and develop their singing voices in preparation for participation in the Athens Children’s Chorus.

Piano Prep Program THIS CLASS RUNS FROM JANUARY 18-MAY 2 WITH ONE WEEK OFF FOR SPRING BREAK
Katherine Fisher, instructor; $225 for 15 classes; enrollment limited to 8; Fridays from 5:30-6:30pm; Room 560.
Open to 2nd & 3rd graders only.
Students enjoy a varied curriculum that emphasizes musicianship through keyboard instruction with ACMS affiliate faculty and OU piano pedagogy students. Purchase of a method book required. Teacher - student ratio is 1:2.

 

World Drumming for Kids – AVAILABLE IN WINTER & SPRING Jeff Wolfe, instructor; $88 for 8 classes; Saturdays from 10:15-11am; Room 494 . For ages 9-13.
Children will experience drumming and other hand percussion sounds and techniques from cultures around the world. Instruments are provided.

Classes for Adults & HS Teens:
Classes open to sophomores in high school through adults.

Group Piano- Level 1 AVAILABLE IN FALL & WINTER - Angela Leising, instructor; $88 for 8 classes; Tuesdays from 7:10-8:00pm; Room 560.
This class will provide instruction for those with limited or no previous piano experience. Learn to play both classical and popular works on the piano in the Roland electronic piano laboratory! Purchase of a method book is required.

Group Voice - Level 1 – NOT CURRENTLY OFFERED Ivy Crockron, instructor; $88 for 8 classes;  Tuesdays from 6:10-7:00pm; Room 540. 
An excellent way for the beginning or intermediate adult singer who has already had exposure to voice study to participate in a group setting. Students will develop good posture, breathing, phrasing, and interpretation of song literature. Purchase of a song packet required.

Basic Music Theory AVAILABLE IN FALL, WINTER, & SPRING Greg Sigman, instructor; $88 for 8 classes; Tuesdays from 7:10-8:00pm; Room 561.  
Students will learn to identify key signatures, scales, intervals and chord structures as well as train in rhythmic and musical notation. A great class for amateur musicians to sharpen their ears and more fully comprehend the basic building blocks of music .

Group Guitar "Six String Savvy" AVAILABLE IN FALL, WINTER, & SPRING – John Horne, instructor; $100 for 6 classes lasting 80 minutes each; Tuesdays from 6:10-7:30pm; Room 565.
Designed for beginning to intermediate level guitarists, this course covers the fundamentals of guitar playing with an emphasis on rhythm playing and vocal accompaniment. Students will use familiar songs by artists such as The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Jimmy Buffet and others as a platform for mastering common chords, learning standard strumming and fingerpicking patterns, and exploring common musical styles and song forms. Additionally, several tips and tricks commonly used by professional guitarists will be revealed including a simple system for remembering every major and minor chord on the fingerboard. Six 80-minute classes allow plenty of time for group playing and individualized instruction . Open to sophomores in high school through adults

Ensembles
Athens Children’s Chorus – FALL ENROLLMENT. Melanie Horne, director; $175 annual tuition.
Apprentices
–for children grades 3-5 (and 6th graders with no experience); meets 6:30-7:45pm on Thursdays in Glidden Hall room 494.
Advanced Ensemble – for children in grades 5-9. Audition required (see below); meets 7-8:30pm on Thursdays in Glidden Hall room 494.

The Athens Children’s Chorus is a performance ensemble, which focuses on healthy and expressive singing habits, rehearsal and performance techniques, and music reading skills.  The ensemble performs 2- and 3-part songs, partner songs, and canons at various concerts throughout the year including a children’s chorus festival.  Students learn musical concepts by singing quality music appropriate to the child voice from a variety of periods and a wide range of styles and cultures.

Athens String Orchestras – OPEN ENROLLMENT . Elizabeth Braun, director; Open Enrollment; $175 annual tuition; Tuesdays; Room 494.

The Athens String Orchestras are open to string players of all ages with varied abilities. The ensembles focus on developing individual string technique as well as group performance skills. One concert will be presented per quarter. Most music is provided, however, the purchase of a book is likely. Students must provide their own instruments.

Cadet Strings – for students with 1-3 years of instruction; meets 6:30-7:30pm on Tuesdays in Glidden Hall room 494.

Concert Strings – for students with 3 or more years of instruction who read music; meets 7:15-8:30pm on Tuesdays in Glidden Hall room 494
