Potential candidates must possess an MA or MFA degree from an accredited American or international university. Master's degree work may be in historical-critical studies in one of the major art forms or may be in studio or performance fields. Master's degree work in any of the Humanities, e.g., History, Philosophy, Modern Languages is acceptable.
The following materials also must be submitted:
- Official transcripts of all previous degree/certificate work
- Three current letters of recommendation that address the candidate's academic achievement and potential
- A three- to five-page essay in which the applicant discusses reasons for selecting interdisciplinary work for a graduate degree and a statement of philosophical and practical expectations from such study
- Intended primary and secondary areas of study
- Admission application forms from the Ohio University Graduate Catalog
- A sample research paper from the applicant's previous work
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores or the Miller's Analogies Test (MAT)
- International students must submit evidence of proficiency in the English language. Well qualified students are expected to have scores of 575 or above on the paper TOEFL, 233 or above with essay of 5.5 or above on the computer TOEFL, or 91 on the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT). Students with lower scores may be considered for admission, but will be retested upon arrival at Ohio University and may be required to take additional intensive English courses. All international students will be required to take a composition test upon arrival at Ohio University, and may be required to take intensive English courses. International students applying for a Graduate Teaching Associateship must submit their scores on the Test of Spoken English (TSE) or take the SPEAK test upon arrival in Ohio. Students must score 50 on the TSE or 230 on the SPEAK test to be offered a teaching stipend. Students who score between 200 and 250 on the SPEAK test are eligible to teach while concurrently enrolled in a course to improve their oral communication skills.
- International students must submit an affidavit of financial support as evidence of financial responsibility. (See: O.U. Graduate Catalog, pg. 7)
- All applicants must follow the Admission Policies and Procedures specified in the O.U. Graduate Catalog.
- A personal interview is recommended
January 31: Priority consideration for graduate teaching assistantship. Later applications may be considered, depending on enrollment and availability of financial assistance. Admission is granted for fall quarter only. Students will be notified within one month of the application deadline.
Financial Aid
The School of Interdisciplinary Arts offers competitive graduate teaching associate stipends (currently $12,885) which include a tuition scholarship. Two maxi stipends (currently $16,107) are awarded annually. Notification of stipend/scholarship awards is approximately May 1.
