Professor Gillespie has previously taught at the New School in the Department of Media Studies and Film, and
at Duke University in the Film and Video, African, and African American programs.
His research interests include film theory and aesthetics, film blackness, visual and expressive culture,
historiography, genre studies, adaptation theory, hip hop modernism, free jazz, the Japanese New Wave,
Third Cinema, and the oeuvre of Todd Haynes, Spike Lee, Atom Egoyan, and Claire Denis.
