Jack Wright is an artist whose work is strongly informed by the culture of the Appalachian mountains. A founding member of Appalshop, a multi-disciplinary arts and education center in Kentucky, he is an actor, documentary filmmaker, and musician whose work has appeared on National Public Radio, PBS, June Appal Recordings and in Hollywood films. His articles about Appalachian art and artists-particularly film and video-have appeared in Ace Magazine, Independent Spirit, Iron Mountain Review, Appalachian Journal, Old-Time Herald, and other publications. His recent projects include producing Music Of Coal: Mining Songs From the Appalachian Coalfields, a two CD anthology and a spoken word CD, Fondelle: The Whore With the Heart of Gold, a novella written and read by Ed McClanahan. Jack is music director for the recent Appalshop documentary release Thoughts in the Presence of Fear, a post-September 11 manifesto for environmentalists, written by Wendell Berry and directed by Herb E. Smith.

Jack has twice received individual artist fellowships from the Ohio Arts Council for his writing. In 2002-03 he taught at Berea College as the National Endowment for the Humanities Scholar of Appalachian Studies. Since 2001 he has been chairman and a founding member of the Jenco Foundation.

Jack did the music, writing and narration on Buffalo Creek: An Act of Man, a Mimi Pickering documentary that, was one of 25 films named to the National Film Registry in 2005.
