Annie J. Howell has written and directed several short fiction and nonfiction films and has exhibited them internationally on the film festival circuit, including screenings at SXSW, Newport, Full Frame, Clermont-Ferrand, MadCat and SilverDOCS. Her films have been screened on the Sundance Channel, PBS, and the Independent Film Channel. Recent work includes scripts in development with organizations such as ITVS (The Independent Television Service) and NYC production company Locomotive Films, and a web series, sparks-series.com, scheduled to premiere on thesundancechannel.com in the fall of 2009. Recent awards include a 2005 Screenwriters' Colony fellowship and a 2008 IFP Grand Prize Award in Digital Filmmaking from Panasonic, awarded for an original screenplay. She previously taught at The New School, where she was the Founding Director of the Graduate Certificate in Documentary Media Studies (ranked in its third year as one of the top ten documentary programs in North America), and at Duke University's Center for Documentary Studies and the Duke Program in Film and Video.
