Program Description:
The M.A. in Film is a two-year program in film history, analysis, and theory designed to prepare students for further study at the doctoral level or for careers in which a film studies background may be relevant—for example film criticism; arts-related writing more broadly; the administration of arts, museum, or academic programs; the coordination of film or media productions; or library, archive, or film preservation work.
The M.A. Program in Film is comprised of seventy-five hours of coursework and a written thesis on a topic chosen in consultation with a faculty advisor. Successful completion of the program requires satisfactory fulfillment of coursework and language requirements as detailed on the MA Curriculum page, participation in a first-year review discussion with faculty, and completion and successful defense of the thesis.
M.A. students are also encouraged to become actively involved in their field, particularly by making scholarly presentations at conferences or other forums.
