Art, Art History and Film in London & Edinburgh
June 24 - July 21, 2010 Summer Program

Thank you for considering our Great Britain summer program. This is an opportunity to spend four fascinating and challenging weeks in the heart of London and Edinburgh.

This year's program is similar to past offerings with three notable exceptions. We hope each of these will make your time in Great Britain more enjoyable and convenient. These are:

NEW HOUSING
We will reside in very nice apartments just off Russell Square and the British Museum, a perfect location in central London. These apartments were built in the late 18th century, but were totally remodeled in 2004. Students will share these large furnished apartments (the British call them flats) with 4-6 other students. Each fully furnished flat is equipped with a completely equipped kitchen, a TV, dishwasher, washing machine and clothes dryer, and large refrigerator. This enables you to cook your own meals and launder your clothes in the comfort of your apartment while in London. Wireless internet is available in your flat, although there is a fee for this service. We will still stay in a hotel when we travel to Edinburgh.

COMPUTER LAB ACCESS
You will now have 24/7 access to Florida State University's London Study Centre, located just 1 block from our flats. This will provide you with use of their computer lab, where you can use email and write and print your papers. A lounge is also available to you. You can also pay a fee for a wireless internet connection in your apartment, but keep in mind that the FSU Study Centre is just a 3 minute walk from your flat.

NEW COURSE OPTION
For the first time we are offering a film course option, Documentary Filmmaking, taught by Jeanette Buck from the School of Film. All majors are eligible to take this course, which will enable you to create a personal record of your month's adventure in the United Kingdom. See the Courses section for a full description of this exciting new class.

Highlights & Brief Summary of Our London Adventures & Costs

Dates: June 24- July 21, 2010

Location: London, Edinburgh

Program Sponsors: This program is sponsored by the School of Art, School of film and the College of Fine Arts in collaboration with Education Abroad.

All Majors Welcome:
All majors are welcome. Over half the students who attend are from majors other than art studio and art history. The students from other OU colleges are always among the finest participants in this program, bringing very different and invaluable insights to our discussions. No previous art history background is required for any of our art history courses or the Art 300J.

Total Number of Student Participants:
Participation is limited to the first 26 accepted students. Enrollment is on a rolling basis, meaning that the first 26 students who apply and are accepted will attend. So please apply early. The program fee below is based upon 26 students, so if we decide to go with fewer participants the price is subject to an increase.

Graduate Students:
Graduate students find this program extraordinarily useful. Most return to OU with many new ideas that enrich their own art making and transform their thesis show. Art History grad students find that viewing original works of art on a daily basis much improves their understanding of art history, and many conduct research directly related to their MA thesis.

Most graduate students qualify for a summer tuition waiver (Graduate Recruitment Scholarship). See the "Financial Aid and Scholarship" section below for details.

What makes our Great Britain courses so different than our courses taught on campus?
Unlike courses taught on campus, all classes in G.B. are taught directly on sites throughout London and Edinburgh. Thinking about and studying art and art history directly from the object, and if possible within its proper context, is an exciting and unforgettable experience. Students find they learn art history much faster & gain new insights about already familiar art by studying original works.

Art students will explore London’s contemporary art world, which many critics feel is the most dynamic in the world. Students will also attend once in a lifetime special exhibitions. Previous exhibitions have included the art of Dali, Rembrandt, Magritte, the Impressionists, Orientalism, Art of the Aztecs, Star Wars, Warhol, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, the Pre-Raphaelites, contemporary British art, and much, much more.

Our instructors know London and Edinburgh intimately, and are avid Anglophiles. You will love their enthusiasm and knowledge of British art and culture!

YOUR PROGRAM FEE OF $3599 INCLUDES ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

Apartment in London (this repeats the paragraph on housing listed above):

Great Britain Cell Phone:
Each participant will be given a Great Britain cell phone while you are abroad which can also be used to call the USA. This is a basic, pay-as-you-go type phone, meaning that while the phone is provided for you, you will still need to pay for the cell phone minutes you need/choose. Please keep in mind that the phone belongs to the program, so you must reimburse Ohio University if you lose it.

Hotel in Edinburgh:
We will travel to Edinburgh together by train in mid-July. We will stay in this venerable city 4 days and 3 nights. Students usually feel this visit to Edinburgh is one of the highlights of our program. You will share your hotel room with one other person. Breakfast is included with the hotel. See photos.

Bus Tour of London:
We will have our own private tour of London complete with professional guide on our first full day in London.

Two All-Day Guided Bus Trips:
We will take 2 all day bus trips outside of London. A professional guide travels with us both days. Our first trip will be to prehistoric Stonehenge and Avebury, and the 2nd adventure will take us to Oxford and then Blenhaim Palace.

Two World Class Plays:
You will attend one world class West End play, usually an outstanding musical such as Billy Elliot or Mary Poppins. You will also attend a Shakespearean play at the famous outdoor New Globe Theatre.

London Eye Ferris Wheel Ride:
At dusk we will take a London Eye ride on the world’s tallest ferris wheel. This is a great way to gain a sense of central London and beyond.

Museum & Gallery Entry Fees:
While most museums have free admission to their permanent collections, they all charge a fee for special exhibitions. The program will pay for some of these special admission fees.

Our Last Evening in London:
We will have a final group dinner at a popular restaurant or pub.

Insurance Coverage While in Great Britain:
As a participant of an Ohio University study abroad program, you are automatically enrolled in a supplemental health insurance plan through HTH Worldwide Insurance Services prior to departure. HTH has an extensive network of providers around the world, and online services to help you plan for medical care before you leave and while you are in London and Edinburgh. Once enrolled in the program, you will receive a description of HTH benefits and covered medical expenses. In addition, you will receive an insurance card prior to your departure. Please carry this insurance card with you at all times while you are overseas. This insurance costs only $26.60/month/student, and is included in the program fee.

ADDITIONAL PROGRAM COSTS

TUITION:
All students must pay for the cost of tuition, just as you would if you were attending classes on the Athens campus. All participants must enroll fulltime (minimum of 12 credit hours for undergraduate students, or 9 credit hours for graduate students). While tuition rates are scheduled to be increased this summer by 2.33%, the exact summer tuition totals have not yet been published. To check your tuition fees, please use OU's tuition estimator (http://reports.registrar.ohiou.edu/tuitionestimator/). The current tuition fees are:

Air Transportation and Extending Your Trip:
In an effort to save you as much as $300-$400, students must purchase their own airline ticket to/from London. Many of you may wish to travel from the airport when you arrive in London on a bus that will take us directly to our London apartments. If you wish to do this, you MUST purchase a ticket on one of the two flights that your professors will be traveling on. Please contact Jody Lamb for details regarding these two flights if you wish to take advantage of this direct transportation. We will also recommend a travel agent for you to contact if you want a good price.

If this service does not matter to you, you will be provided with detailed travel instructions from both Heathrow and Gatwick airports to your apartment. Make certain you depart from the United States on June 24, or you will miss our private guided tour of London, our orientation, and our first classes. If you arrive in London earlier than June 25, you will have to find your own lodging until that date.

Keep in mind that there are two London airports, Heathrow and Gatwick. Heathrow is much closer to central London than Gatwick, and consequently the cost of traveling to our apartments is less. But Gatwick provides an excellent and direct train that will take you into central London within 30 minutes.

Many students decide to remain in Europe after the program ends, flying back from an airport other than London. Please feel free to do this, keeping in mind that you will not be able to rent your London apartment after the program ends on July 21 unless you make individual reservations in advance.

Air Transportation Estimate to/from London: $950 - $1300

Administrative Fee:$150

Meals: $1,000
The kitchens in your apartments are fully equipped, so you will be able to cook all your meals there if you choose. There are two grocery stores at the Brunswick Centre just 3 minutes from our flats. We are also literally surrounded by restaurants, many of which are inexpensive due to the fact that the University of London is nearby, and there are several local pubs that serve good food.

London Underground and Bus transportation: $250

Train Travel to/from Edinburgh: $205-249
If you buy your train ticket to/from Edinburgh after arriving in London, this can cost you anywhere from $100-$300 or more depending upon the rate you are then able to book. Most students prefer to buy a Britrail Flexipass in advance while still in the USA. Keep in mind that you cannot purchase this in Great Britain. Most of you qualify for the Youth Britrail Flexipass (25 years old or younger).

The Britrail Flexipass will get you to and from Edinburgh and leave you with 1-2 other day trip(s) anywhere in Great Britain at no additional cost. The current cost of a youth Britrail Flexipass ticket for 3 days of travel in 2 months is $205, while 4 days of travel in 2 months is $249. For details see http://www.britrail.com/?gclid=CIKPbigzp0CFdVL5Qod-DTKrQ or go to http://www.britainontrack.com/buypasses/passdetails.cfm?pass=19

Supplies for Studio Classes: $100-$150

Your Passport & Photo: $110
You should order your passport ASAP. The estimated time to receive a passport is currently 10 weeks.

You can go on-line at www.travel.state.gov and download a copy of the DS 11 passport form. If you are applying for a passport for the first time, you must apply in person, but you can download the appropriate paperwork.

You can also order your passport by going to the Athens
County Courthouse, 4th floor (740-592-3242). The passport
fee is $67, and there is ALSO a $30 processing fee, bringing
the total cost to $97. When applying, you must bring a valid
driver's license and an original birth certificate or a certified
copy of it (this means with an official stamp which has left a
raised seal imprint). For more information on accepted documentation, visit this link.

You must also bring 2 official passport photographs (from places like CVS, AAA, Kinko's or elsewhere); you cannot bring a snapshot because a passport photograph is a special heatproof photo. You can receive your passport in 2 weeks if it is expedited; the additional fee is $60 plus the cost of envelopes both ways, costing $27, bringing the cost of this service to $87 plus the $97 for the passport, or $184 total

Incidentals/Personal Expenses: $400
This is difficult to estimate, as it varies tremendously from student to student, depending upon how frugal you are. London is a very expensive city, so it is easy to spend a great deal of money if you are not careful.

Estimated student cosl: $7,108 + OU TUITION

ART, ART HISTORY AND FILM IN GREAT BRITAIN SUMMER COURSES

Enrollment Options and Credit Hours:
Our program offers you a wide variety of courses to meet your specific needs and interests. All participating students MUST be enrolled full time. Undergrads must take a minimum of 11 credit hours (the maximum allowed is 20 credit hours); graduate students must enroll for a minimum of 9 hours (18 credit hours maximum). This generally equates to 3 classes. Most students sign up for a total of 3 courses. Keep in mind that taking more than 3 courses will mean that you have classes each morning and afternoon 5 days weekly, and you won't have much spare time to explore London or to travel.

Students outside the College of Fine Arts are welcome and encouraged to attend. Over half the participating students come from majors outside the School of Art and College of Fine Arts. While most of you will take the Art, Art History and film courses we offer, you are encouraged to work out an independent study course or project to complete in the U.K. with an OU professor from your own major. Please talk with us about this possibility if this interests you.
