Art History in London, Winter Intersession Program

December 2 - 13, 2008

If you have limited time for an Education Abroad experience, and would like to experience exciting London during the Christmas holiday season (when it is blissfully free of tourists), then this program may be perfect for you.

This program provides you with a wide variety of cultural and social experiences. We stay in a three-star hotel in the very center of London, at Russell Square. From there you are within easy walking or Underground distance of literally 100s of exciting activities.

Your 19th century art history class meets each morning, and is always taught on site at some of the world's finest museums and galleries. Students find that they learn much faster and retain their knowledge much longer when studying art first hand rather than from slides and books. Experience some of the world's most famous artwork, including French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art such as Edouard Manet's A Bar at the Folies-Bergere and Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. You will discover some of the unique joys of British art, such as the Turner Prize, a famous urban roof top garden in Kensington, and Leighton House, the former residence of a wealthy Victorian painter. We will visit the private gallery of a well known art dealer (who regularly appears on CNN and Antiques Road Show); he will talk about the unique nature of his profession. We will also attend some special temporary exhibitions; in the past these have included Armani Designs, Aztec Art, Art Deco, Ansel Adams, and much, much more.

Other adventures include a half day guided bus tour of London the day after our arrival, a ride on the London Eye (the millennium ferris wheel which provides the finest available view of this wonderful city), a proper afternoon British cream tea at Fortnum and Mason’s famous restaurant, and a final dinner together at Kettner's restaurant, without doubt London’s most elegant pizzeria. We will attend three world-class West End plays, including a musical such as Mary Poppins or Lord of the Rings. We generally attend one play starring a famous British or American actor.

Because the art history classes are usually taught in the mornings and the plays and other group activities take place at night, your afternoons are free to pursue your own interests. You may wish to do your Christmas shopping there, where you will unquestionably discover many unusual gifts for friends and family back home.

Who & How Many Students May Participate:

All majors welcome.  Most students who attend are in fact not art or art history majors.  Participation is limited to the first 10 accepted students.  The program fee below is based upon 10 students, so if we decide to go with fewer participants the price is subject to an increase.

Dates:  December 2-13, 2008

YOUR PROGRAM FEE OF $2799  INCLUDES ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

Air Transportation:  Price quoted is from/to Columbus-London.  Your ticket can be adjusted to allow you to fly from another destination.  Your airline ticket might then be slightly more or less depending upon where you fly from.

Ground Transportation:  To and from the London Gatwick airport/hotel.  The program pays for all tips.

Hotel:  You will be staying 10 nights in the famous Bloomsbury area on Russell Square at The Imperial Hotel (rated AAA), just 3 minutes from the British Museum, and 1 minute from the London Underground transport system. This is an extremely convenient central London location, and you will be able to easily walk to virtually everywhere we go as a group.  To see photographs of our hotel, go to http://www.imperialhotels.co.uk/imperial1_hotel.aspx.  Our $2799 package includes a shared room with one or two other people.  Each room will have a bathroom.

The hotel is located near 3 internet centers, and is 2-3 minutes from many inexpensive restaurants and pubs.

Breakfast daily:  Breakfast is included in the cost of your hotel room.

Tour of London:  We will have our own private tour of London complete with guide on our first full day there.

3 West End Plays:  You will see some of the world’s finest West End plays, such as the fabulous musicals, Lord of the Rings or Mary Poppins.  While it is too soon to purchase tickets, one play usually features a famous American or British actor or actress.

London Eye Ferris Wheel Ride:  At dusk we will take a London Eye ride on the world’s tallest ferris wheel.  A great way to gain a sense of central London and beyond.

A Proper English Cream Tea:  We will have a proper English cream tea at Fortnum and Mason’s, world renowned for this very British activity.  Students often like to dress up for this event, although it is up to you

Museum & Gallery Entry Fees:  While most museums charge nothing to visit their permanent collections, they all charge a fee for special exhibitions.  The program will pay for these entry fees.

Our Last Evening in London:  Dinner at Kettner’s Restaurant, unquestionably the most elegant pizza restaurant in London.

ADDITIONAL COSTS OF THIS TRIP

  • TUITION:  4 undergraduate credit hours, Resident, $1132; Non-Resident, $2312; Graduate Resident, $1548, Graduate Non-resident $2872.

OTHER EXPENSES IN LONDON:  2 meals daily ($15-$30 daily for 2 meals, although you can eat less than this in fast food restaurants), London transportation ($60-$70 total), spending money.

ART HISTORY COURSE (4 credit hours)

AH 327x:  19th Century Art     4 credit hours

AH 527x:  19th Century Art     4 credit hours

Each day we visit museums and galleries together, visiting some of the best museums in the world, such as the British Museum or National Gallery.  After my lecture and tour of the galleries, students are given discussion topics and paper assignments to complete at the museum.  2-4 page papers will also be written either at night or after you return to the States.  Students greatly enjoy these experiences because of this ‘hands-on’ approach to learning art history.

You will also enjoy some uniquely British art adventures, such as the spectacular private home of the Victorian artist Lord Leighton.  Other highlights will include once in a lifetime special temporary exhibitions.  In the past we have attended a Giorgio Armani retrospective, Turner Prize, The Sculpted Nude, Zoomorphic, Peter Paul Rubens, Buried Treasure: Finding Our Treasure, Pre-Raphaelite and other Masters: The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection, & Below Stairs: 400 Years of Servants’ Portraits, and many others.

Completion of Course assignments:

You have until the end of Winter Quarter to complete all the assignments.  Due to the limited amount of time we are in London, I recommend that you take great notes while in London, and then complete your papers by the end of the Winter Quarter deadline.  This will give you more free time to explore London.  However, you can complete these assignments during our trip.

Free time in London:

Classes usually meet during the mornings.  This means you will have each afternoon off to explore London.  Many evenings (those nights we are not going to plays) will also be open.

APPLYING TO THE PROGRAM:

You must fill out the Office of Education Abroad application form to apply for the program.  This is available on their website (http://www.ohiou.edu/educationabroad).

You need ONE letter of recommendation.  I will let you know whether or not you are accepted within a few days after I review your application.  Please turn in your application to the Education Abroad office, 185 Lindley Hall.

You will not be officially accepted into the program until 1) You have completed the application form available on-line at the Education Abroad website; 2) You have received an email notice from Dr. Lamb that you have been nominated and you have confirmed your acceptance, 3) You have paid your $500 deposit (see below).

No one else will be accepted after 10 students make their deposit, but we will keep a waiting list in case someone drops out.

DEPOSIT & BALANCE DUE DEADLINES:

A $500 nonrefundable deposit will be due shortly after you accept your nomination to the program.  After you have completed the Education Abroad application and have been nominated to participate in the program, the Education Abroad office will provide you with a deposit slip.  You must then take this to the Chubb Hall Cashier's Office and pay your $500 deposit.  You will be billed the remaining balance for the London program along with your winter quarter fees in early December.

There are no scholarships available for this program.

YOUR PASSPORT

You should order your passport ASAP. The estimated time to receive a passport is currently 10 weeks.

You can go on-line at www.travel.state.gov and download a copy of the DS 11passport form.  If you are applying for a passport for the first time, you must apply in person, but you can download the appropriate paperwork.

You can also order your passport by going to the Athens County Courthouse, 4th floor (592-3242).  The passport fee is $67, and there is ALSO a $30 processing fee, bringing the total cost to $97.  When applying, you must bring a valid driver's license and an original birth certificate or a certified copy of it (this means with an official stamp which has left a raised seal imprint).  For more information on accepted documentation, visit http://www.travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_830.html.   You must also bring 2 official passport photographs (from places like CVS, AAA, Kinko's or elsewhere); you cannot bring a snapshot because a passport photograph is a special heatproof photo.  You can receive your passport in 2 weeks if it is expedited; the additional fee is $60 plus the cost of envelopes both ways, costing $27, bringing the cost of this service to $87 plus the $97 for the passport, or $184 total
