Art and Art History in Great Britain Summer Courses

Our program offers you a wide variety of courses to meet your specific needs and interests. Keep in mind that all students MUST be enrolled as a full time student. Undergrads must take a minimum of 11 credit hours (the maximum is 20 credit hours); graduate students must enroll for a minimum of 9 hours (18 credit hours maximum). This generally equates to 3 classes. Students who wish more than the minimum hours often sign up for independent study hours. Most students sign up for 3 courses, as additional courses will mean that you have classes each morning and afternoon 5 days weekly, and you won't have much spare time to explore London and elsewhere.

Students outside the College of Fine Arts are welcome and encouraged to attend. Over half the participating students are outside of the School of Art and College of Fine Arts. While most of you will take the School of Art courses listed below, you are free to work out projects to complete in the U.K. with your own department’s professors. Please talk with us about this possibility if this interests you.

ART STUDIO COURSES: A wide variety of Painting, Drawing, or Collage Courses

You have many, many art studio options, depending on the level of the painting or drawing class you need. All are taught together, so students generally take just one of these classes. Like the art history classes, you will meet every day at sites throughout London to create your work or to study contemporary art. There is a special and very popular collage course option designed specifically for students with no art background.

AH 327/AH 527: 19th Century Art (taught by Jody Lamb)

This course is taught solely on site at some of the world's finest museums and galleries. Students find that they learn much faster and retain their knowledge much longer when studying art first hand rather than from slides and books. Experience some of the world's most famous artwork, including French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art such as Edouard Manet's A Bar at the Folies-Bergere and Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. You will discover some of the unique joys of British art, such as the Turner Prize, a famous urban roof top garden in Kensington, and Leighton House, the former residence of a wealthy Victorian painter. We will visit the private gallery of a well known art dealer, Rupert Maas, who regularly appears on CNN and Antiques Road Show; he will talk about the unique nature of his profession. We will also attend some special temporary exhibitions; in the past these have included Armani Designs, Aztec Art, Art Deco, Ansel Adams, and much, much more.

AH 330/AH 530: Arts of the Orient (taught by Gary Schwindler)

Over generations, the British have acquired vast public and private collections of art, including some of the great treasures from Near and Far Eastern cultures. As well, people from virtually every living culture of the East have settled in Great Britain.

Class meetings in the Arts of the Orient take advantage of this remarkable proximity between the past and the present. Art collections are studied, and visits to such sites as temples and mosques bring students face to face with representatives of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam. Thus, students have unique opportunities to observe and document their experiences with such non-Western contexts.

Art 300 J: Junior Writing Requirement (4 credit hours, taught by Ron Kroutel)

This is our classroom: London, the greatest contemporary art scene in Europe, second only internationally to New York. This is our text: the art galleries in London that exhibit the unique growing tip of contemporary art, some of it outrageous, some of it brilliant, art that is new and has not yet become generally accepted in museums. Writing your thoughts down about this vibrant living art will help you to examine current cultural issues as well as to define your own ideas and attitudes. Students from all Colleges, as well as from the College of Fine arts, are equally welcome an have found this course relevant, interesting and rewarding.

I do not lecture in the galleries. Instead we have discussions and at times write spontaneous reactions to the exhibitions and to the artist’s studio we visit. There also are two essays (critical reviews) that are peer edited and then rewritten. The first will be based on description and the second on interpretation, always looking for the unique connection to the British cultural context and how this influences the artwork and our perception of it

INDEPENDENT STUDY COURSES FOR NON-MAJORS IN YOUR OWN AREA OF EXPERTISE (1-5 credit hours possible)

Each year at least half the students participating will be from majors outside the SOA. Some of these students sign up for an independent study project with a professor in their own major before we leave for Britain. This usually means you must do much work independently each day you are in Britain, and then complete the project after returning to Athens. If interested, begin by visiting a favorite professor and asking her/him if this is possible. In the past, majors in Education, Biology, Journalism, Theatre, Film, and Dance and other areas have pursued fascinating projects.
