New College of Fine Arts Program Grant Opportunity:
The College of Fine Arts is very pleased to announce a new need based grant for participants in the Art and Art History in Great Britain Summer Program. The application deadline is March 21. For the application details and form, see below under "Financial Aid & Scholarships."
Our Travel Agent, Buell Travel:
For questions about your travel arrangements, please contact Felicia Buell at buelltravel@windstream.net or phone 314-805-6368. Leave a brief message and Felicia will get back to you within 24 hours. If this is urgent, please contact the Office of Education Abroad.
Total Number of Student Participants:
Participation is limited to the first 24 accepted students. Enrollment is on a rolling basis, meaning that the first 24 students who apply and are accepted will attend. The program fee below is based upon 24 students, so if we decide to go with fewer participants the price is subject to an increase.
All Majors Welcome:
All majors are welcome. Over half the students who attend are from majors other than art studio and art history. The students from other OU colleges are always among the finest participants in this program, bringing very different and invaluable insights to our discussions. No previous art history background is required for any of our art history courses or the Art 300J.
Graduate Students:
Graduate students find this program extraordinarily useful. Art Studio majors discover that they return to OU with many new ideas that enrich their own art making. Art History majors frequently conduct research related to their MA thesis, and it is possible for Art History students to focus on their own research while in London.
Most graduate students qualify for a tuition waiver (Graduate Recruitment Scholarship). See the "Financial Aid and Scholarship" section below for details.
What makes these G.B. courses so different than our courses on campus?
Unlike courses on campus, all classes in G.B. are taught directly on sites throughout London and Edinburgh. Thinking about and studying art and art history directly from the object (and if possible within its proper context) is an exciting and unforgettable experience. Students find they learn art history much faster & gain new insights about already familiar art by studying original works of art.
Art students will have the opportunity to discover London’s contemporary art world, which many critics feel is the most dynamic in the world. You will also get to study British student work, as many art schools have their end of the year shows in June or July.
There will also be special once in a lifetime exhibitions on view. For example, students have previously seen exhibitions of the art of Dali, Rembrandt, Magritte, the Impressionists, Star Wars, Warhol, Art Nouveau, the Pre-Raphaelites, the Archaeology of Agatha Christie, contemporary British art, visits to artists’ studios, and much, much more.
Our instructors know London and Edinburgh intimately, and are avid Anglophiles. You will love their enthusiasm and knowledge of British art and culture!
YOUR PROGRAM FEE OF $4599 INCLUDES ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:
Air Transportation: Price quoted is from/to Columbus-London. Your ticket can be adjusted to allow you to fly to/from another destination. Your airline ticket might then be slightly more or less depending upon where you fly from. Many students decide to remain in Europe after the program ends, flying back from a European airport other than London. Please contact our travel agent, Felicia Buell, for a price quote to/from a different destination. Keep in mind that while many programs advertise a cheaper "Program Fee," very few programs include air transportation in their quoted total.
Ground Transportation: To and from the London Gatwick airport/dorm. This means that upon arrival we will be met at the airport and taken directly to our London dorm, and when we depart on the last day, we will be taken in a bus back to the airport. The program fee includes this service, including all tips.
Dormitory in London: You will be staying in Nutford House a dormitory located in a very convenient central London location. For information and photos of the dorm click here.
You will have a private room. This room has a sink but no bathroom facilities; however, bathrooms and showers are conveniently located throughout the dorm. There is internet access in your dorm.
Breakfast & Dinner daily at the Dormitory: Breakfast and dinner are included in the cost of your dormitory room.
Hotel in Edinburgh: We will travel by train to Edinburgh in mid-July. We will stay in this venerable city 4 days and 3 nights. Students generally find this one of the highlights of our program. You will share your hotel room with one other person. Breakfast is included with the hotel. See photos.
Bus Tour of London: We will have our own private tour of London complete with professional guide on our first full day in London.
2 All Day Guided Bus Trips: We will take 2 all day bus trips outside of London. A professional guide travels with us both days. Our first trip will be to prehistoric Stonehenge and Avebury, and the 2nd adventure will take us to the famous seaside resort of Brighton.
2 World Class Plays: You will see one of the world’s finest West End plays, such as the fabulous musicals Lion King or Mary Poppins. You will also attend a Shakespearean play at the famous New Globe Theatre.
London Eye Ferris Wheel Ride: At dusk we will take a London Eye ride on the world’s tallest ferris wheel. This is a great way to gain a sense of central London and beyond.
Museum & Gallery Entry Fees: While most museums have free admission to their permanent collections, they all charge a fee for special exhibitions. The program will pay for several of these special admission fees.
Our Last Evening in London: We will have a final group dinner at a popular restaurant or pub.
Insurance Coverage While in Great Britain: $25
As a participant of an Ohio University study abroad program, you are automatically enrolled in a supplemental health insurance plan through HTH Worldwide Insurance Services prior to departure. HTH has an extensive network of providers around the world, and online services to help you plan for medical care before you leave. Once enrolled in the program, you will receive a description of HTH benefits and covered medical expenses. In addition, you will receive an insurance card prior to your departure. Please carry this insurance card with you at all times while you are overseas. This insurance costs only $25/month/student, and is included in the program fee.
ADDITIONAL PROGRAM COSTS
*TUITION: All students must pay for the cost of tuition, just as you would if you were attending classes on the Athens campus. All participants must enroll fulltime (minimum of 12 credit hours for undergraduate students, or 9 credit hours for graduate students). The tuition fees are:
- Undergraduate, tier II, resident (enrollment date after winter 2002): $2969
- Undergraduate, tier II, non-resident (enrollment date after winter 2002): $5957
- Graduate, resident: $3,126 or
Graduate, non-resident: $5,790
*Administrative Fee: $150
*Lunches (Board): $400
*London Underground and Bus transportation: $225
*Train Travel to/from Edinburgh: $263
If you buy your train ticket to/from Edinburgh after arriving in London, this can cost you anywhere from $75-$300 or more depending upon the rate you can get in advance. Most students prefer to buy a Britrail Flexipass in advance while still in the USA. This will get you to and from Edinburgh and leave you with one other ‘free’ day trip anywhere in the U.K. The current cost of a youth Britrail Flexipass ticket (4 days of travel in 2 months) is $263 (if you are under 26). For details see http://www.acprailnet.com/britrailbook
You MUST purchase the Britrail Flexipass in this country, as it is NOT sold in Great Britain.
*Supplies for Studio Classes: $100
*Your Passport & Photo: $107
You should order your passport ASAP. The estimated time to receive a passport is currently 10 weeks.
You can go on-line at www.travel.state.gov and download a copy of the DS 11 passport form. If you are applying for a passport for the first time, you must apply in person, but you can download the appropriate paperwork.
You can also order your passport by going to the Athens County Courthouse, 4th floor (740-592-3242). The passport fee is $67, and there is ALSO a $30 processing fee, bringing the total cost to $97. When applying, you must bring a valid driver's license and an original birth certificate or a certified copy of it (this means with an official stamp which has left a raised seal imprint). For more information on accepted documentation, visit http://www.travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_830.html. You must also bring 2 official passport photographs (from places like CVS, AAA, Kinko's or elsewhere); you cannot bring a snapshot because a passport photograph is a special heatproof photo. You can receive your passport in 2 weeks if it is expedited; the additional fee is $60 plus the cost of envelopes both ways, costing $27, bringing the cost of this service to $87 plus the $97 for the passport, or $184 total
*Incidentals/Personal Expenses: $100
This is difficult to estimate, as it varies tremendously from student to student, depending upon how frugal you are. London is a very expensive city, so it is easy to spend lots of money if you are not careful.
ESTIMATED TOTAL STUDENT COST: $5,944 + OU TUITION

ART AND ART HISTORY IN GREAT BRITAIN SUMMER COURSES
Our program offers you a wide variety of courses to meet your specific needs and interests. Keep in mind that all students MUST be enrolled as a full time student. Undergrads must take a minimum of 11 credit hours (the maximum is 20 credit hours); graduate students must enroll for a minimum of 9 hours (18 credit hours maximum). This generally equates to 3 classes. Students who wish more than the minimum hours often sign up for independent study hours. Most students sign up for 3 courses, as additional courses will mean that you have classes each morning and afternoon 5 days weekly, and you won't have much spare time to explore London and elsewhere.
Students outside the College of Fine Arts are welcome and encouraged to attend. Over half the participating students are outside of the School of Art and College of Fine Arts. While most of you will take the School of Art courses listed below, you are free to work out projects to complete in the U.K. with your own department’s professors. Please talk with us about this possibility if this interests you.
