Director Agnes Varda's most critically acclaimed film, "Vagabond" is the story of a woman who rejects society and civilization to pursue a chance to live freely. Mona, played by Sandrine Bonnaire, is a secretary who gives up everything to wander through the south of France as a vagabond. The film follows Mona as she uncovers the harsh reality of obtaining complete freedom from a world she attempts to leave behind.
Varda's "jarringly blatant" account of Mona's travels earned the director first prize at the Venice Film Festival.
"Miss Varda's experience as a documentary film maker frames the story, creating the pretense of reality..." -Caryn James, New York Times
