The Great Dictator
Saturday November 10 8:00pm and Monday November 12 8:00pm
In one of the great classic films of all time, the “Little Tramp” takes
on a dual role as both a poor Jewish barber, and “Adenoid Hynkel”—a not-so-subtle – and hilarious – version of Adolf Hitler. The ensuing farce, complete with mistaken identities, political shenanigans, and slapstick comedy, is a biting satire about Nazis and their agenda to rule the world. Chaplin’s physical comedy is never better, especially in his rendition of the Great Dictator dancing, playing, and controlling the world, in the form of a balloon painted like the globe. Made in 1940 prior to the U.S. entrance into World War II, “The Great Dictator” generated in its time a fierce debate about fascism, power, and anti-Semitism. For its time, it was a warning about things to come. And for our time, its message about tyrants and power still speaks volumes. We are very privileged to be able to screen this film in a newly restored 35mm print, a rare opportunity to see this classic film in its original format.
