Considered by many to be the greatest African filmmaker, Ousmane Sembene’s last feature Moolaadé tells the story of girls escaping from a ceremony of female circumcision and their unlikely protector. Since the beginning of his career as a filmmaker in post-colonial Africa, Sembene dealt with a number of issues about tradition and the position of women living in a patriarchal society.
Despite the serious controversy and bitterness regarding the subject of female genital mutilation, Moolaadé is acclaimed for its vivacious, simple, and formally rich style in its treatment of the story.
