Foundations Program
John Sabraw, Assistant Director, Foundations Chair

Mission Statement
Studio Foundations at Ohio University is a comprehensive program tailored to the needs of today's entering undergraduate art students. The School of Art believes that there is a common body of knowledge and experience useful and essential to beginning art students. This integrated Foundations program includes a sequence of three Drawing courses, Three-Dimensional Studies, Foundations Photography, Color, and Foundations Concepts.

The Foundations program intends to provide students with the necessary intellectual and practical skills to identify their own talent and make informed choices about their major. Students are encouraged to meet regularly with an advisor, to make sure they are on track and making the most of their experience at OU.

All students enter the School of Art as General Art students; between 60 and 75 students enter the program annually. During the first two years art students complete the seven studio Foundations classes. In the second year students also take 5 major area studio classes of their choice to aid them in finding a major. This coursework prepares students for portfolio reviews that are required for acceptance into a major and usually occur in the spring of the sophomore year.
