Mission Statement
The painting area is committed to cutting-edge professional art training within the context of a liberal arts university. Painters are responsible for some of the most provocative and enduring expressions of contemporary visual culture. The painting program is based upon the belief that painting is a language that simultaneously upholds tradition and constantly seeks experimentation to expand and redefine its boundaries. In an atmosphere that is both supportive and challenging, students are asked to question their intentions, investigate and expand their ideas of painting, and to develop a coherent body of work that is the beginning of a dialog with the world.
Although students begin with a focus on traditional media and techniques, they are encouraged to experiment with a wide range of technical and theoretical interests, from figuration to abstraction, and on to digital media, installations and performance. All graduate students have private studio spaces in the Ridges facility and undergraduate students who demonstrate exceptional promise and discipline are given independent studio spaces within the Seigfred Hall facility. The Painting Department also offers several courses in drawing, mixed media, critical theory seminars, study abroad opportunities, as well as an annual field trip to New York to view current galleries, museum shows and studios of professional artists. We are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools in Art And Design, and our students regularly go on to receive Fulbright Awards, national artist-in-residencies, gallery representation, university teaching positions and other types of professional positions in the field as post-graduates. Several well known artists have come from our school including Jim Dine and Jenny Holzer and, most recently, one of our painting alumni, Beth Campbell, was selected for a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Faculty
All faculty in the painting area are working artists who exhibit actively and serve as visiting artists and lecturers at colleges and galleries across the country. Ohio University and the Painting Department are committed to the creation of a diverse community of artist scholars.
Facilities
The painting area facilities of the School of Art are located in Seigfred Hall. Seigfred Hall, a Bauhaus style building, was constructed especially to house a dynamic and growing Art Department. The painting area’s primary facilities are located on the fifth floor and include access to the following equipment and facilities:
Over two dozen adjustable studio easels
Additionally, each graduate student is provided with an individual studio space.
At the Ridges Complex (http://www.finearts.ohio.edu/art/facilities/ridges.htm), we provide private studios with 24 hour access. To meet the growing technological needs of our graduate students, the College of Fine Arts created the interdisciplinary Aesthetic Technologies Lab (http://www.ohiou.edu/atlab/), which has state of the art computers, such as dual G5 processors, blue screen technology, motion capture suits and hi-end production quality video cameras.
