Seigfred Hall, the art building at Ohio University, dedicates its entire first floor to the three dimensional arts of ceramics and sculpture. The ceramic studio occupies over 7500 square feet. Ceramic undergraduate majors receive their own workspaces to work towards their exhibitions. Graduate Students have approximately 300 sq ft each of private studio that they can configure to their needs.
The Ceramic Studio
All students have access to a well-equipped studio that includes:
- Over twenty five thousand dollars in raw material inventory
- Equipment consisting of over 30 potters wheels, 3 clay mixers (2 Soldners, 1 Bluebird), 2 slab rollers, a ballmill, sandblaster, 2 “Slip-O-Matics”, an extruder, glaze spraying booth and a well-stocked ventilated glaze room and clay mixing area
We also have a tool room consisting of various hand tools, a mig welder, stick welder, oxy acetylene torch, brick saw among other tools.
The Ceramic program at Ohio University has arguably one of the best outdoor kiln yards of any program. Kiln building classes are offered at undergraduate level at least every other year.

The Studio also has it’s own slide taking set –up that students can use to document their work.
The School of Art itself is committed to advancing students’ work in whichever direction it takes them. To that end all students have full use of the Schools’ Woodshop after taking a woodshop safety certification.
Graduate Students have access to The Aesthetic Technologies Lab. A specialized interdisciplinary computer and new media lab directed at Graduate and Faculty research, and located in Putnam Hall, within the School of Dance.
Alden Library has a huge collection of Ceramic Books as well as magazines such as Ceramics Monthly, Ceramic Art and Perception, Ceramics Technical, Ceramic Review, American Crafts etc. This is in addition to the Art collection as a whole, which is well stocked with contemporary as well as historical materials.
