Mission Statement
The painting program focuses instruction on understanding the issues surrounding contemporary image making, fused with a thorough knowledge of methods and materials. Students are offered courses that explore traditional and contemporary ways of investigating pictorial structure, content, and form. In an atmosphere that is both supportive and challenging, students are asked to question their intentions, investigate and expand their ideas of painting, and to develop a coherent body of work that is the beginning of a dialog with the art world today. Our graduate students have successfully attained adjunct and tenure-track college level teaching positions as well as exhibited their work in galleries, museums, and alternative spaces.

The painting faculty has exhibited work in museums, galleries and alternative spaces in New York, California, the Midwest, Europe, Canada, Mexico and Japan.

Facilities
Each graduate student is provided with an individual studio space. All students have access to the School of Art woodworking facility.
