Summer 2007 at Ohio University

This year Ohio University Ceramics presents two new workshop programs featuring two of the medium’s most celebrated artists with a cross-over symposium and panel on Saturday July 21st:

The Anatomy of Material with Adelaide Paul - July 9th – July 21st
Art 169G A01, Art 369G A01, Art 569G A01 (5 Credits)

This workshop focuses on contemporary techniques in ceramic sculpture with special emphasis on the combination of ceramics with other materials. Adelaide will demonstrate how she works with leather, ceramics and other materials, as she prepares for a Solo Exhibition at Garth Clark Gallery in New York.

There will be demonstrations and lectures by Adelaide, OU professor Alex Hibbitt, and graduate students. Participants will be encouraged to explore their own specific areas of interest under the mentorship of the artists. The workshop will round off with an exhibition of work made by participants in the School of Art Gallery, and the symposium on Saturday the 21st of July.

Adelaide Paul is a studio artist living in Philadelphia, PA. She teaches at The Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, and is a Teaching Assistant for Gross Anatomy at The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. She received her BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 1993 and her MFA from Louisiana State University in 1996. Adelaide has shown extensively and is represented by The Garth Clark Gallery in New York.

Woodfire Festival with Jason Hess – July 21st – August 3rd
Art 169G A02, Art 369G A02, Art 569G A02 (5 Credits)

Experience the thrill of multiple wood firings on Ohio University’s famed Kiln Pad! This workshop will focus on this traditional firing technique, and the spectacular results the firings can impart. Although the emphasis will be on utilitarian form, sculptural approaches are also encouraged. Participants will be asked to bring 2 or 3 bisqued pieces to put into the first kilns. The workshop will round off with a kiln pad party and exposition.
Jason will be joined by Robert “Boomer” Moore, and Brad Schwieger, as well as graduate students

Jason Hess teaches at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ. He gained a BA in studio Arts from Beloit College in 1991 and a MFA from Utah State University in 1996. In October 2006, Jason hosted the Woodfire Conference “20 + 1 years of Tozan Kilns” at Northern Arizona University. His many exhibitions include Feats of Clay XVII, Strictly Functional and Bourbon and Whiskey: A Welcome Inspiration.

Symposium

On Saturday 21st July, There will be a symposium, where participants and artists from both workshops will come together for artist’s talks, a panel discussion featuring visiting scholar Jeff Guido, and artists Adelaide Paul and Jason Hess, an exhibition of work from the first workshop and a public reception.

Jeff Guido is the Artistic Director of The Clay Studio in Philadelphia. He gained his BFA from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI. He was the production manager at Pewabic Pottery in Detroit, overseeing the making and installation of large-scale ceramic projects before leaving to state Habatat/Shaw Gallery, which later became ShawGuido Gallery. In his role at The Clay Studio, Jeff has been responsible for the showcasing of the best of contemporary ceramic work from around the world.

Workshop Costs:

For Ohio University Students, register as for other summer classes, normal tuition fees apply

For non-Ohio University students each two- week workshop has several options:
As a non-credit Participant $1,200
As a non-degree visiting undergraduate gaining 5 credit hours $1,415
As a non-degree visiting graduate gaining 5 credit hours $1,935
There is also a $100 materials fee for each workshop, which covers all ceramic materials and firing costs.

Housing

Housing is available on campus in the heart of Athens, close to Seigfred Hall, and all the uptown restaurants and amenities. Single rooms are $37.15 per person per night, a double room is 24.65 per person per night. Linens are $1.50 per night and towels are $1.50 per night (you can also bring your own). If you prefer to live off campus, we can put you in touch with local landlords.

Scholarships

We are offering 2 scholarships for the summer program this year. Scholarships cover tuition, excluding material fee and housing.

The Appalachian Scholarship is for a student who exhibits exceptional talent and comes from an Appalachian region (as defined by The Appalachian Regional Commission. Information can be found at www.arc.gov

The Ethnic Minority Scholarship is for a student who exhibits exceptional talent and is from a minority background.

To apply for a scholarship, fill in the application form, and send a CD or slides of 10 images of ceramic and other artwork, with a short resume to:
