Matthew Friday holds a BFA from the University of New Mexico and a MFA from Indiana State University. He participated in an exchange program with the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London and the Whitney Independent Study Program in New York City.

Friday previously worked as a curatorial assistant and installation coordinator for exhibitions of Manhattan public school students and as an installation assistant to various New York City galleries. A former Associate Professor at the State University of New York in Oswego, Friday served as both Painting coordinator and Contemporary Art and Theory instructor.

Friday has exhibited nationally in numerous solo and juried exhibitions and presented several papers concerning the interaction between visual culture and critical theory. Participation in exhibitions include the Whitney Museum of American Art Open Studios, Exit Art Gallery, Buffalo Art Studio, State University of New York at Buffalo Art Department Gallery, Cambridge Art Association, Rochester Contemporary Art Gallery, University of Rochester Art Gallery and the Center for Contemporary Arts in St. Louis, Missouri. As part of the international art collective spurse, Friday has exhibited at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, ArtSpace in New Haven Connecticut and the Indianapolis Museum of Art. His work has been reviewed in the New Art Examiner, The Chicago Reader, The Post Standard, and Punk Planet. His work has been supported with a number of grants including a New York Federation for the Arts Strategic Opportunity Stipend.
