Sculptor William Cravis draws on an ever-expanding mixed-media practice to create a variety of works that range from durable miniature castings to monumental temporary public sculptures and installations. He earned his B.F.A. from California College of the Arts and his M.F.A. degree from Carnegie Mellon University. Alternative educational experiences play a key role in the overall development of Cravis’ interdisciplinary vision. His background includes a solo cross-country bicycle trip, several apprenticeships – first to a Japanese chef in Harvard Square, and later to a potter in Oregon – and residencies in the United States and Switzerland. Among his recent distinctions he was the recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation M.F.A. Grant in 2006. Cravis’ exhibition record includes the Three Rivers Arts Festival in Pittsburgh (2004) and the CUE Foundation in New York (2007). His work can be found in the permanent collection of the State Museum of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg .
